Soweto Derby Legends Match Cancelled for a Second Time

Football fans in Durban face major disappointment as the highly anticipated Legends Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates has been called off.

Originally scheduled for Sunday, 29 March, at Moses Mabhida Stadium, this marks the second time the nostalgic event has collapsed following a previous cancellation in February.

The exhibition was set to feature iconic stars such as Siphiwe Tshabalala and Itumeleng Khune for the Amakhosi, while the Buccaneers’ Masters squad included Lucky Lekgwathi and Happy Jele. Despite players already beginning their physical preparations, organisers Puzzle Pictures confirmed the fixture could not proceed.

In a statement, the organisers explained: “Despite our unwavering commitment and extensive efforts to bring this historic and nostalgic event to life, we have encountered circumstances beyond our control that have made it impossible to proceed as planned.”

While the vision for the match remains alive, the City of eThekwini has advised supporters that full refunds will be processed. This news follows a period of mixed fortunes for the clubs, with Pirates recently defeating Chiefs 3-0 in the Premiership to claim the top spot.
